Ajaccio
Along with Bastia this town on Corsica's west coast is an important harbour for the whole island. Napoleon was born in this picturesque town in 1769 and in 1811 he declared it the island's capital. island Maison Bonapartex, the house in which Napoleon was born, is a monument to this famous man.

Monaco
After the Vatican, Monaco is Europe's smallest state. It is made up of four "districts", and the old part of the town, which houses the Royal Palace and the Cathedral, is situated on a rocky promontory. Monte Carlo with its world-famous casino, is full of multi-storey hotels. Between the two are "la Condamine", with its business houses and villas, and teh marina of "Fontvielle".

 


Valetta
Valetta, named after jean Parisot de la Valette the Grand Master of the Order of St. John, is the capital of the island of Malta. It lies on the east coast on the rocky peninsula of Sceberras, which separates the two main harbours on the island (the Grand Harbour to the south and Marsamxett to the north). On account of their location on the eastern sea route from the Straits of Sicily, the harbours have had a vast strategic importance. Valetta is characterised by massive fortification, reflecting the wealth of the Order of St. John. Among the many monuments to the Baroque and Renaissance eras are the Palace of the Grand Master, the Cathedral of St. John and the residences of the Knights of the order.
