Langdale Chase Windermere

The Langdale Chase is a truly magnificent country house hotel, which commands panoramic and inspirational views of the Lake and mountains from the seclusion of its own wooded grounds. Just three miles north of Windermere and two miles south of Ambleside, it is situated in the heart of Lakeland. The foundation stone for the building itself was laid in 1890, and the house took some five years to complete. It was first opened as a hotel in 1930. However, there are carvings and artifacts in the hotel which date back as far as 1664. Large, imposing rooms, oak-panelled and mellowed with the years, a collection of fine oil paintings, ornate carved fireplaces and the magnificent oak staircase tell their won story of a hotel rich in history and character. Blessed with so many architectural and decorative examples of our heritage, not to mention hidden treasures, such as the original mosaic floors in the porch, laid by craftsmen brought over from Italy, the house is listed as one of national and historic interest. The grounds of some six acres slope gently to the Lake. They were planned and laid out by Thomas Henry Mawson, a landscape architect of international distinction, who was responsible for the ‘Palace of Peace Gardens’ in the Hague. The Hotel’s outstanding interior and location made it a natural choice for the classic English country house in Alfred Hitchcock’s production of ‘The Paradine Case’ starring Gregory Peck, and more recently in the BBC’s portrayal of the life of Donald Campbell. The Lake District, is itself, steeped in history. From Langdale Chase, you don’t have to go far to follow in the steps of Coleridge, Wallpole, Shelley, Ruskin, Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. All bedrooms are individually and tastefully furnished. Many have Lake views, and all have private bathrooms. Further accommodation is provided by a Lakeland-stone garden bungalow, with private car parking for the convenience of our patrons. The six bungalow rooms open onto a wide terrace overlooking the Lake. The hotel also boasts unique bedroom. This particularly romantic room is situated over the boat house, where you will be lulled to sleep to the sound of gently tapping water. In 1930 there were so many squirrels in the grounds and they were so tame that they ran along the balustrade and came right up to the windows to be fed; and so it seemed appropriate to adopt the Red Squirrel as an emblem for the Hotel. Panoramic views invite you to wine and dine in our restaurant, perhaps preceded by a drink in our intimate cocktail bar. Designed to compliment the setting, the variety of food and wine is sure to delight the most discerning diner, and being pampered by our attentive staff will be one of the many highlights of your stay with us. Lunches and afternoon teas are always available indoors or out on the lawn-fringed terraces. For your special occasion, be it wedding, anniversary party or a birthday treat, we will gladly advise you of the additional services we can provide. Could there be a better place to spend Christmas away from home? We think not! Here, before the welcoming crackle of our roaring log fires, you will discover that the genuine warmth and hospitality that once graced the ancient homes of England is still very much alive. Waters which have graced the boasts of Miss Windermere breaking several world records with Norman Hughes Buckley, the then owner of Langdale Chase, at the helm. Besides boating, why not try your hand at croquet, or for the more energetic, there is a water ski centre, and an all-weather pool and fitness centre available nearby. Reservations for golf and other sports facilities can be made through the reception.
