Methuen Arms

Set in the pretty town of Corsham, just eight miles from Bath and three miles from Chippenham, is the honey-stoned, Georgian facade of the Methuen Arms Hotel. Family owned and personally managed, it is one of those rare hotels where guests can combine the best of both town and country living, being at the edge of the parklands of Corsham Court whose gardens were landscaped by Capability Brown. Apart from the Georgian architecture, the ancient stone walls, mullioned windows and oak beams of the "The Long Room" date back to the fourteenth century and this section was originally a nunnery. The other wings and buildings around the courtyard at the rear of the building date from the 1600's but parts may be earlier. The nunnery became a public house (tourist will call it a PUB) in 1608 and was known as the Red Lion by 1637. The Duke of Edinburgh often played skittles at the Methuen Arms when he was Training Officer at the nearby HMS Royal Arthur and in 1947, as Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten, he unveiled Corsham's war memorial in the Garden of Remembrance. The hotel has twenty five delightful bedrooms each individually decorated with fine furnishings and fabrics. The en-suite bedrooms have colour television, direct dial phones and tea and coffee making facilities. The Winter's Court Restaurant, with its candlelit, stone-walled charm has a range of individually priced menus as well as an a la carte menu to satisfy even the most discerning palate, with an extensive range of both simple and classical dishes using mainly locally produce meat and fresh vegetables. The Lounge Bar and Long Room also offer a wide variety of bar meals with home cooked daily changing special dishes. Situated in Corsham on the junction of Corsham High Street and Pickwick Road (the B3353). It is approximately a ninety-minute drive from London or sixty minutes from Heathrow Airport. To find Corsham from London, leave the M4 motorway at exit 17 and take the A429 south-bound towards Chippenham, following the signs for the A4 to Bath and, after three miles, at the traffic lights turn left to Corsham. The Georgian splendour of Bath, with its magnificent Roman baths, Assembly Rooms, Royal Crescent and Circus, is only 15 minutes drive and the city of Bristol is just under 20 miles away.
